Research Rationale

As I am currently attending a sixth form college within a secondary school, I have direct access to teenagers aged 16-19 and access to the younger years in the school aged 11-16. With this broad age range, I am able to conduct fair research to teenagers in this age range. By asking the different age groups within the ages of 11-19, I am able to find out what will appeal the most to my target group.

My chosen genre is pop and I will be conducting research on this. I will be conducting both qualitative and quantitative research. For my qualitative research I will be doing a focus group of 3-5 people. This will help to see what my target group like about different music magazine front covers. For my quantitative research, I will be conducting a survey that will be given to my target audience and then the results will be tallied up and presented in graphs etc. These pieces of research will help me see what my target market like and dislike about the covers of music magazines and their thoughts on the music industry in general.

To conduct my research I will need a group of 3 – 5 people that are aged in my target group. Having the ability to do this because I am surrounded by my target group is very helpful as I have a large target group and they are very near if I need them. I will also need to create a survey and send it round to my target group to fill out. I will then need to collect the data and create the graphs and bar charts.

To conclude, this research will help me to see the successful elements of a music magazine. This will also give me a better understanding of my genre and target group.

Typography MoodBoard

This is my Typography Moodboard:

This post shows the different fonts used by music magazines, musicians and record labels. Most of the record labels have fonts that are bold and sharp, like NME, Vlog 'N' Roll and Lanark records. A lot of the musicians either have a handwritten/personalized logo or a blocked letter logo. For example, Ed Sheeran has a handwritten like font with a little dog print whereas Adele has a simple Arial like font.

The logos above are mainly black and white which gives the effect that they don’t need to be colourful to grab the reader’s attention. However, I think that adding colour can allow you to change this colour in future editions according to the theme of that cover.

During this task, I found that most of the music magazines liked to keep their fonts and logos simple which I found quite surprising as I would have thought they would have been the ones with the most extravagant fonts.

This task has allowed me to see other fonts that are used in the music industry and has given me some ideas for fonts I might possible go for when creating my own masthead and magazine. It has also shown me different fonts artists use so this will help when I am creating my artist.

PRELIM TASK: Consent Pictures

Here are all my consent pictures:

PRELIM TASK: Finished Product

Hello. This is my finished Cover and Contents Pages:

The Front Cover and the Contents Page work together because they both use the colour red. They also show sixth formers (my target market) in pictures. They work together because they both compliment each other. I like the way both my front cover and contents page turned out and I think they both look good.

PRELIM TASK: Audience Feedback

Here is my audience feedback:

PRELIM TASK: Flat Plan

Today's post is my first draft of my flatplan and my final flatplan.

This is my first draft of my college magazines front cover. I have a split image and at this point i hadn't thought of a title so therefore i just wrote TITLE in the masthead.

To the right here is the first draft of my contents page. Again as i didn't know what the name was going to be i wrote TITLE. This drawing shows a rough layout to what i want my contents page to look like.

On the left, is my final flatplan for the front cover of my college magazine. I have used the name I picked from a previous post and I have added some of the features in. I have decided on a pull quote too.
Finally, on the right I have my final flatplan for my contents page. I have abbreviated the name to SFS and changed the design/layout slightly from before. I like this one better as as it mingles the text and writing nicely.

PRELIM TASK: Magazine Name MindMap

This post is the Mindmap I created to show the different names I thought of for my magazine, which one I have picked and why I have picked it.

I picked Sixth Form Secrets because it fitted best with who I was aiming my magazine at, which is GCSE students going into Sixth Form, and it sound like it would intrigue my target audience into reading the magazine. I also liked this one because it could easily be shortened to S.F.S which would also be good if i was to created a logo for my magazine.

I like SIXTH FORM SECRETS as it sounds like there are special secrets about/in sixth form that only sixth formers know about.

I used iThoughts to make this Mindmap.

PRELIM TASK: Magazine Deconstruction

Here is my Magazine Deconstruction:

PRELIM TASK: Hello and Initial Thoughts

Hello and welcome to my AS media studies blog. This will be a place for all my media studies work to be showed. My first task is to create a college magazine. I can't wait to start working on it. In class we have started parts that will work up to the final product. We were asked to have a think about what our magazine would look like and after some thought i have some ideas. I am thinking of aiming my magazine at GCSE students that are transferring into higher eduction, apprenticeships etc. I haven't thought of a title yet but i do have ideas for the image on the cover. My colour theme will probably be centre around something from the image. I look forward to rest of this project and hope to have more ideas on the subject further into the project.
